What won the race: Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., led all 40 laps from the pole and cruised to win Saturday's Summer Kickoff feature at Sumter Speedway, earning his 12th career victory with the Ultimate Southeast Series and $5,000. The triumph moveed Mitchell into sole possession of third place on the tour's all-time win list.
Quotable: "We just unloaded right out of the box pretty quick," Mitchell said. "I can't thank all my crew and family. The race car ran awesome tonight. It was flawless really. I was just worried about me falling out of the seat and not doing my job."
Key notes: Mitchell earned his third series feature victory of the season and retained his spot atop the series point standings. He also etched his name into Sumter Speedway's record books after setting a new track record in qualifying (14.558 seconds) in his first-ever visit to the track. ... Steve Banal kept pace with Mitchell throughout the race but settled for the runner-up position, 1.376 seconds back. ... Banjo Duke, the defending Ultimate Southeast Series winner at Sumter, finished third. ... Utilizing a 602 crate engine, Austin Mintz qualified second and finished fourth. ... A three-car crash occurred on lap 37 involving sixth-running Kale Green and seventh-place Justin Mintz. Both drivers were okay but unable to continue, finishing 10th and 11th respectively. ... Ross Bailes was the third driver involved, but he was able to make repairs and complete the race, finishing eighth. ... Tony Ayers suffered mechanical problems during hot laps and scratched for the evening at his home track. ... The ninth race of the tour's 17-race schedule was slowed by five cautions and lasted 36 minutes, with eight competitors completing all 40 laps.
