What won the race: Bursting from third to first in a span of three circuits, Chad Mahder of Bloomer, Wis., assumed command on lap 28 and marched on to capture Sunday's 42nd Punky Manor Challenge of Champions at Red Cedar Speedway. His winning burst carried him past Jimmy Mars and race-long pacesetter A.J. Diemel to claim the $4,500 top prize in the 40-lap WISSOTA Late Model feature, which was pushed to Sunday afternoon due to Saturday-evening showers.
Key notes: Mahder, who started fifth, used the low side of the oval to grab second from Mars on lap 25 and overtake Diemel for the lead on lap 28. ... Ninth-starter Darrell Nelson slipped past Mars and Diemel on lap 38 and finished second, 1.614 seconds behind Mahder. ... Diemel settled for a third-place finish Mars, last year's Punky Manor winner, placed fourth. ... Jimmy Mars earned the race's $5,555 winner's check. ... The Punky Manor event honors the late racer and former Late Model champion who died at the age of 26 in an automobile accident. ... Joe Provo Race Wear posted $500 to the hard charger in the Late Model feature; Harry Hanson picked up the money for his 10-position gain.
On the move: Harry Hanson of Eveleth, Minn., started 23rd and finished 13th.
