Josh Putnam and crew all smiles following the $10,000 win.
What won the race: Taking control when race-long leader Wil Herrington spun on lap 13, Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., withstood rough track conditions to lead the final 12 laps at Magnolia Motor Speedway of Saturday's 20th annual Governor's Cup feature. Putnam earned $10,000 for his second career Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series victory, also his first with the inaugural season of the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series.
Quotable: “Man, I felt like I was screwing up every lap down there on that bottom, but I knew early we were good out on the race track,” Putnam said. “I mean I hate that for Wil (Herrington) down there, that was an unfortunate break for him. I don’t know that we’d ever got by him, I think me and him had two good race cars, for what we had here. When I got the lead there, I made up my mind I was gonna stay on the bottom and however slow I had to get into the bottom and try to keep my wheels on my race car and keep the driveline in it, that’s what we was gonna do. You know, it paid off.”
Key notes: Tenth-starting Joseph Joiner moved into the runner-up position on lap 24 and finished 4.285 seconds back. ... Pole-starting John Henderson fell back to sixth but ended up third. ... Second-starting Wil Herrington led the first 13 laps before hitting a rut in turn two and nosing into the infield berm, causing him to spin; Herrington tagged the rear in ninth and finished fourth. ... Ryan Crane advanced nine positions and finished fifth. ... Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., gave up third in pitting with a flat right-rear tire on lap 10 and marched through the field when he flipped on lap 15 for the race's final stoppage; Freeman appeared to sheer the right-rear wheel off his Capital Race Car entering turn one, causing him to flip several times before the car came to a rest on its wheels. The wreck required a 15-minute red flag cleanup. ... Shane Clanton retired while running third on lap three, opting to preserve his equipment. ... After receiving substantial rain on Thursday and Friday, Magnolia's track surface was heavy and rough, prompting some drivers to load up after qualifying such as Billy Moyer Jr., Stormy Scott and Dane Dacus. Others scratched following the heats, including Ashton Winger, Morgan Bagley, Donald McIntosh, Bubba Mullins and Matthew Brocato. ... Saturday's feature, reduced to 25 laps from 50 because of track conditions, was slowed by eight incidents and lasted 44 minutes with 11 drivers running at the finish.
On the move: Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., started 21st and finished ninth.
