What won the race: Utilizing the outside groove to power around race-long leader Donald McIntosh on a lap-25 restart, fourth-starting Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., led the final 16 laps Tuesday at Toccoa Raceway for a $7,553 Schaeffer's Southern Nationals victory. Mitchell secured his second consecutive series after winning Saturday at Screven Motor Speedway.
Quotable: “Man I kinda found something (on the outside line) passing one of them lapped cars,” Mitchell said. “You know I got in there and got up top and man it gripped-up. Then we had that restart and I was like ‘please let me go on the outside’ and ya know I got around Sam (Seawright) and Kenny (Collins) also. I knew right then I might have something for (McIntosh) if I could line up there on that second row.”
Key notes: After leading the first 24 laps from the pole, McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., settled for the runner-up spot, 1.106 seconds back. ... Second-starting Kenny Collins rounded out the podium. .. Seventh-starting David McCoy finished fourth. ... Jimmy Owens started and finished fifth. ... Ricky Weiss advanced five positions and finished sixth. ... Mike Benedum started 21st and finished 13th aboard his backup Kryptonite Chassis after discovering motor issues in his primary Team Zero Race Car. ... Eighth-running David Payne drew the race's final caution when he sustained a flat left-front tire on lap 37. ... The third caution flew when third-running Sam Seawright suffered a flat left-rear tire on lap 24; Seawright's team changed the flat, only for him to retire nine laps later. ... Payton Freeman changed a flat right-rear tire under the race's first yellow on lap seven, but he pulled off after completing just 15 more laps. ... Tuesday's feature was slowed by four cautions and lasted 26 minutes, with 12 drivers completing 40 laps; 15 were running at the finish. ... Mark Wilbanks scratched.
On the move: Tyler Clem of St. Petersburg, Fla., started 14th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Mitchell’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Eubanks Oil, Clary Hood, Inc., SoCar Chemical, Charles West Grading, Rolling Pines Lawn & Landscaping, Hoosier Tire, Fox Racing Shocks and DirtCarLift.
