Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) Series
Derrick Stewart captured his first career Malvern Bank Series victory.
What won the race: Powering around the outside of Andrew Kosiski at turn-four exit on lap 20, second-starting Derrick Stewart of Ainsworth, Iowa, led the final six laps to win Tuesday's $3,000 Battle of the Blue Ribbon at Clay County Fair Speedway. Stewart led twice for seven laps (1, 20-25) to secure his first career Malvern Bank Series victory in the inaugural visit to the Spencer, Iowa, oval and notched his second triumph of the season after topping June 2's Hoker Trucking Series stop at Columbus Junction (Iowa) Speedway.
Quotable: “I knew Andrew (Kosiski) wasn’t gonna come off the bottom, so I had to make something happen,” Stewart said. “You know, we haven’t really been good down around the bottom lately, but we’re getting there. I didn’t want that (lap-16) caution, I was just getting to (Kosiski) and he was getting tight down (in turns one and two). The caution came out and Tad (Pospisil) kinda got by me (on the restart), I just had to get myself collected and hit my marks and just get back to what I was doing, and it really paid off.”
Key notes: Pole-starting Kosiski, of Omaha, Neb., led laps 2-19 before giving way to Stewart and fading to finish third. ... Series points leader Tad Pospisil overtook Kosiski on the final lap and finished 1.239 seconds behind Stewart. ... Bill Leighton Jr. and Corey Zeitner battled for fourth throughout the race, with Leighton prevailing and Zeitner settling for fifth. ... Tuesday's feature was slowed by one caution when Jeff Segebart lost his driveshaft on lap 16 while running 16th. ... The 10-minute main event saw 14 drivers complete 25 laps and running at the finish. … Chris Spieker scratched for the night following a heavy impact during his heat race. ... Jesse Sobbing of Malvern, Iowa, is out for the season because of a medical situation. ... The two-day Battle of the Blue Ribbon concludes with Wednesday’s action featuring IMCA Modifieds, stock cars, sport mods, hobby stocks and sport compacts.
