Russell Erwin emerges from his car victorious in Saturday's Steel Block Bandits stop.
What won the race: Regaining the lead from polesitter Dustin Mitchell on lap nine, third-starting Russell Erwin of Beaverdam, Va., controlled the rest of Saturday’s 50-lap Billy Cagle Memorial at Sumter Speedway to capture the $7,500 victory. Erwin led 43 laps to earn his third career Vision Wheel Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge Series victory and his first since June 18, 2021, at Dixieland Speedway in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Quotable: “I gotta give it up to the whole track crew here at Sumter,” Erwin said. “The way it looked last night, I never thought in a million years they’d get it this nice. You could race all over it, you seen me and Dustin (Mitchell) there, (running) top (to) bottom, you know, kinda duking it out there for a little bit. This is a cool little place for sure, it’s a long haul from home. I don’t like racing at the same place every week, so it’s nice to run this deal, you get to bounce around every time you go race.”
Key notes: Erwin became the fourth different winner of the Billy Cagle Memorial. ... Third-starting Blake Craft grabbed the runner-up spot on lap 24 and trailed Erwin the final 27 laps, finishing 2.319 seconds back. ... The pole-starting Mitchell, of Pine Level, N.C., led laps 2-8 before settling for third. … Michael Rouse, winner of last weekend's $5,000 season opener at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway, started sixth and finished fifth. ... Derick Quade, reigning series champ and Michael Batten each improved three positions, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. ... Saturday's feature lasted 27 minutes, with 11 competitors completing the distance and 13 running at the finish.
On the move: Defending event winner, Robbie Emory of Milton, Del., started 22nd and finished 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Erwin’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Erwin Racing Supply, Motion Sensors, High Farms, Possum Farms, Papa Jack’s Store & Grill, Fritz’s Car Care, M&L Grocery, Willy’s Carbs, Keyser Manufacturing, Dickinson Sanitation Services, Skippy Johnson Motorsports, Hoosier Tire, Penske Racing Shocks by JDS and Collins Signs.
