Chad Simpson (25) chases Chad Holladay (32c) at Davenport.
What won the race: Taking command when mid-race leader Chad Holladay slipped off the track in turn two, sixth-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, led the final five laps to capture Monday's $3,000 Memorial Day special at Davenport Speedway. Simpson secured his fourth career Malvern Bank East Series victory after earning three tour victories last season.
Quotable: “I was just trying to keep as close as I could to (Chad Holladay). You know he had a pretty good car, he was gonna be tough to get around,” Simpson said. “I just had to put the pressure on and hope he made a mistake. We really needed this, this was a brand new car we put together last week and went down to race this weekend in Missouri and back home here."
Key notes: For winning from the sixth starting spot, Simpson was awarded a $750 bonus courtesy of Skyline Materials. ... The fourth-starting Holladay, of Muscatine, Iowa, led laps 9-20 before his lap-21 miscue gave control to Simpson and the runner-up spot to Derrick Stewart. ... Seventh-starting Stewart, of Ainsworth, Iowa, crossed the checkers 0.826 of a second behind Simpson. ... Justin Kay, winner of Saturday's $3,000 opener at Maquoketa, completed the top five. ... Luke Pestka paced the opening eight circuits from the pole before slipping to 12th. ... The race's lone caution flew on lap 11 when third-running Nick Marolf spun off the turn-four racing surface. He completed five more laps before pulling off. ... Monday's Memorial Day feature lasted just shy of 10 minutes, with 13 drivers completing the distance and 17 running at the finish. ... Bryan Klein scratched from the main event after a heat race spin and resulting damage ended his night. ... The race was a makeup of a Friday rainout.
On the move: Overcoming a heat race crash, Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., started 19th and finished ninth aboard a Ricky and Brenda Kay-owned Warrior Race Car.
