Tyler Erb's 11th victory locked up the series championship.
What won the race: Taking advantage when several contenders fell by the wayside, Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, locked up the DIRTcar Summer Nationals championship by leading the final eight laps Sunday at Wayne County Speedway to earn $5,000 and his series-leading 11th victory. Erb was the fourth of four leaders in overtaking 18th-starting Todd Brennan on the 28th of 35 laps and took the checkers 1.554 seconds ahead of ninth-starting Trey Mills. New track record-holder Nick Hoffman led laps 19-23, but a flat tire during a caution knocked him from contention. Dillon McCowan, the lone driver to make every series feature, led the first 18 laps before slipping back and then had a lap-22 flat that doomed his chances.
Quotable: "It just pretty chaotic, you know? Dillon had a flat, Nick had a flat. Just on them restarts — I guess (Todd Brennan) was made at me, but on the restart, he about wrecked the whole field — I'm just glad we won tonight," Erb said. "I'm just glad we won tonight. Yeah, like, like I said, man, I'm having a blast."
Key notes: Erb, who started sixth but was still mired in seventh at halfway, notched his 15th career series victory. ... He picked up $10,000 for the Week 5 title and another $10,000 for the overall championship. ... Todd Brennan used the low groove to rally from 18th, inheriting the lead when Nick Hoffman had a flat; Brennan faded after losing the lead on lap 28. ... Eight cautions slowed the action, the first on the third lap when Tyler Carpenter slowed with problems under the hood. ... Doug Drown and Ryan Missler tangled on lap seven (Missler leaned into Drown's cockpit to express his dissatisfaction in the aftermath). ... Last year's winner Kyle Moore slowed on the 17th lap running seventh. Moore, the track points leader, had won seven consecutive division features entering the night. ... Clay Stuckey slowed on lap 20 and early leader Dillon McCowan had a flat right-rear tire on lap 22. ... Ashton Winger slowed with rear suspension problems, giving up the third spot on lap 24 (a pileup on the ensuing restart drew another yellow). ... A lap-27 yellow appeared for a slowing Ryan Markham. ... Ryan Payne scratched from the feature lineup. ... Nick Hoffman's 16.234-second lap lowered the previous track record of 16.546 seconds set by Devin Moran on Aug. 7, 2021 (Hoffman picked up a $500 bonus from Bucks Auto Sales).
On the move: Todd Brennan of Zanesville, Ohio, started 18th and finished sixth.
