Brian Shirley celebrates a weekend sweep and his third straight series win.
What won the race: Reclaiming control for good when mid-race leader Bobby Pierce slowed with a shredded right-rear tire, Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., paced the final 14 circuits to win Saturday's 60-lap Hawkeye 100 finale at Maquoketa Speedway. Shirley secured the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series weekend sweep at Maquoketa, collecting $20,000 and his third straight tour triumph. He's earned more than $40,000 since topping Wednesday's series debut at Highland (Ill.) Speedway.
Quotable: “Obviously we had a pretty good race car and so did Bobby (Pierce) … we were different on tires, both of us, he was (a) harder (compound), I was soft,” Shirley said. “He was obviously leading, so tonight the good lord was looking after us and, truthfully, I’d like to pinch myself. I’d like to dedicate this race to Scott Bloomquist, obviously we had a tough deal … when you think about it, we all love Scott and we’re gonna miss him.”
Key notes: Shirley led twice for 42 laps (5-32, 47-60) en route to his 11th career WoO victory and his fourth of the season. ... Bobby Pierce led 14 laps (33-46) before slowing with a flat right-rear to draw the race's third and final caution. Pierce rebounded to 12th after changing the tire. He lowered the track record in time trials. ... Nick Hoffman and Brandon Sheppard traded second in the closing laps, with Hoffman prevailing to finish 1.757 seconds behind Shirley and Sheppard settling for third. ... Ryan Gustin recovered to finish fourth after slowing with a flat right-rear on lap 20 and causing the first stoppage. Gustin was scored 20th on the ensuing lap-20 restart. ... Ninth-starting Chris Simpson worked his way as high as fourth on lap 30 before giving way to Gustin on lap 54 and finishing fifth. ... Cody Overton led the opening four laps from the pole before fading to sixth. ... The 60-lap feature lasted 27 minutes, with 16 competitors completing the distance and 20 running at the finish. ... Rain caused a near three-hour delay shortly after hot laps and cars did not hit the track again until about 10 p.m. The checkered flag dropped just before midnight.
On the move: Tyler Bruening of Decorah, Iowa, started 14th and finished seventh; Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., started 17th and rounded out the top 10.
