Jonathan Davenport takes the checkers to win Friday's first $12,000 prelim.
What won the race: Sliding by race-long leader Devin Moran as he was slowed in lapped traffic on lap 21, ninth-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., led the rest of Friday's first 25-lap World 100 semifeature at Eldora Speedway. Davenport led the final five laps unchallenged to claim the $12,000 winner's prize by 2.189 seconds over Moran.
Quotable: “I knew I had the car (to win), I just didn’t know if I had it in me,” Davenport said. “We was making changes and putting tires on … right before we made the last tire call, I said ‘I’m just gonna go out there and ride through the middle and practice for tomorrow,’ cause that’s what really matters." Speaking of his late-race charge to the lead, Davenport added “all these fans out here that showed up tonight (and) watching back home, deserved a hell of a show, so I thought I’d give 'em one.”
Key notes: It's Davenport's third win of the season at Eldora after capturing June's $100,030 Dream XXX and his second win of the week after dominating Wednesday's $20,000 Castrol FloRacing Night in America. ... Davenport is chasing a record-tying sixth career World 100 triumph. ... Devin Moran led the opening 20 laps from the outside front-row before giving way to Davenport. Moran made a turn-one slider by Davenport on the ensuing lap, only for the race's second and final caution to negate the move when Tyler Carpenter slowed before pulling off. ... Moran had his hands full with Bobby Pierce in the closing laps, as Pierce took second on lap 23 before relinquishing it back to Moran and finishing third. ... Seventh-starting Tim McCreadie worked his way as high as fourth before slipping back to seventh with 10 laps to go and rebounding to finish fourth. ... Pole-starting Ryan Gustin pursued Moran the opening 10 laps before sustaining right-rear damage from Eldora's cushion and wall. Gustin's quarterpanel was shaking loose during the first caution, allowing the metal bracing to break free and fall off. Gustin slipped to fifth with his right-rear sheet metal flapping in the wind. ... Zack Mitchell improved eight positions and placed ninth. ... The first stoppage came on lap 11 when Shane Clanton nosed hard into the turn-one wall after battling Wil Herrington for 12th. Clanton voiced his displeasure afterwards and was critical of Herrington's driving. ... Herrington continued and finished seventh. ... Kyle Strickler (blown right-rear tire) and Ricky Thornton Jr. (solo-spin in turn one) each overcame trouble in the second shootout to finish 13th and 14th, respectively, after utilizing provisional starting positions. ... Friday's first 25-lap semifeature lasted 17 minutes, with 20 drivers completing the distance and 24 running at the checkers. ... Ashton Winger scratched after hot laps, opting to save his equipment.
On the move: Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., started 12th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Davenport’s Lance Landers Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Nutrien Ag Solutions, ASC Warranty, Dynagro Seed, Mark Martin Automotive, Mega Plumbing & HVAC, Lucas Oil, Hoosier Racing Tire, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein and Midwest Sheet Metal.
Points chase: World 100 points after Friday: 1. Tim McCreadie (781); 2. Ryan Gustin (768); 3. Jonathan Davenport (766); 4. Bobby Pierce (759); 5. Hudson O’Neal (758); 6. Dale McDowell (755); 7. Kyle Strickler (742); 8. Devin Moran (735); 9. Ethan Dotson (732); 10. Garrett Smith (721).
