What won the race: Turning back Hayden Cardwell's late challenges, Zach Sise of Knoxville, Tenn., led all but one of 70 laps in Sunday's American All-Star Series finale at Beckley Motor Speedway for a $10,000 payday. Sise fought brake problems all race long and took the checkers 2.266 seconds ahead of title-clinching runner-up Hayden Cardwell, who led only lap 59 amid a slide-job battle for the lead with 10 laps remaining.
Quotable: "(The brakes) weren't worth a damn in the race," said Sise, who had brake problems all night. "After about three laps, they just go away and it was terrible. It was hard to drive and hard to be consistent and bouncing through the holes and .. but it's just .. I'm lost for words. This is awesome. I've worked so hard for this and it's really a dream come true."
Key notes: Zach Sise, who was driving a borrowed car after selling his primary car a few weeks ago, lost power during a lap-64 caution and required a push to get rolling again. ... Two-time All-Stars champ Hayden Cardwell led the 59th lap as he and Sise swapped the lead unofficially over a four-lap stretch. ... Cardwell's second straight series title was assured by the early departure of contender A.J. Hicks. ... Thirteen cautions slowed the 73-minute race (including the initial start being called back). ... Joshua Chesney drew cautions on laps 12, 18 and 21. ... A.J. Hicks stopped on the second lap. ... On the eighth lap, Logan Kirkman spun on the backstretch. ... Justin Williams spun on the lap-21 restart. ... On lap 29, Shane Greco stopped on the frontstretch. ... A Kirkman-Logan Walls tangle in turn four drew a lap-40 yellow. ... On Lap 53, T.J. Salango and Ryan Smith tangled exiting turn four (requiring a lengthy cleanup). ... Randy Weaver slowed for a lap-61 caution. ... A lap-64 caution fell for a slowing Henry Hornsby III and on the restart, several cars were involved in a pileup, including fifth-running Freddie Carpenter and Josh Deitz, whose left-rear axle was nearly disconnected. ... In time trials, Weaver lowered the Crate track record with his 13.397-second lap. ... Sunday's event was postponed by Saturday's cold and wet weather.
On the move: Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., started 13th and finished fourth; tail-starting Corey Almond of Appomatox, Va., finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Sise drove a Longhorn Chassis owned by his brother-in-law Addison Cardwell and sponsored by Crate Engine Technology, Zag Equipment Sales, American Racer by Matt, Jack Frost Heating and Cooling and Tony Jones Pest Control.
