What won the race: Fourth-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, took the lead from Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., and raced to a $2,000 victory in Park Jefferson International Speedway's Carlson Clash weekend opener, his first on the MLRA tour since April 2013. Several drivers held the second spot with Jesse Stovall of Billings, Mo., gaining it at the finish over Phillips.
Quotable: "I think we finally got that monkey off our back. It feels good to finally win one. Now we can go after it," said Simpson, the reigning MLRA champ. "When we (started), I knew the top of (turns) one and two was going to be pretty good. For some reason my car seemed to work really good on the bottom of three and four. It worked out good for us."
Key notes: The feature's lone caution appeared for Scott Lewis. ... The weekend doubleheader is co-sanctioned by the Iowa-based Corn Belt Clash circuit. ... The MLRA made just its second visit to the South Dakota oval. ... Simpson, the five-time and defending CBC champion, has two series victories on the season. He was the winner of the April 17 event at Davenport Speedway. ... R.C. Whitwell of Tucson, Ariz., recently joined the running for the MLRA Rookie of the Year title. He finished eighth. ... Saturday's event pays $3,000-to-win.
On the move: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, improved from the 11th starting position to finish sixth. J.C. Wyman of Griswold, Iowa, advanced from the 15th starting spot to finish 10th.
