What won the race: Scoring his first victory of the 2015 season, fourth-starting Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., outdistanced sixth-starting Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, and polesitter Steve Kester of Holland, Ohio, to capture Saturday night's Sunoco American Late Model Series-sanctioned Barney Oldfield Race. The triumph brought the 40-year-old driver a cool $5,100 winner's check.
Key notes: Van Wormer's victory was his first of the season, but he had been knocking on the door to victory lane. In his 12 starts entering the Oldfield Race, he had eight top-five finishes. ... The winner registered his 33rd career ALMS win and his second Barney Oldfield Race triumph. ... The annual event pays tribute to the auto racing pioneer from Wauseon who competed in the early 1900s; it is among Oakshade's richest and most prestgious events. ... The Sunoco-backed tour visited Oakshade for the second of four times. Track points leader Brian Ruhlman of Clark Lake, Mich., won May 23 and competitors will return again on Aug. 1 and Sept. 5.
On the move: Schlenk climbed from sixth to record a runner-up finish; Devin Shiels of Britton, Mich., also improved four positions to finish sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Van Wormer's Rocket Chassis machine includes sponsorship from Bayline Fire Protection, Knochel Oil Company, VanWormer Management, All-Star Performance, Port City Racing and VP Racing Fuels.
Points chase: Schlenk's runner-up finish moved him into the points lead. He entered the night one point behind leader Ryan Unzicker, who did not enter the event.
