Evan Ellis captured Friday's Chevy Series victory at Magnolia.
What won the race: Roaring around the high groove, Evan Ellis of Plantersville, Miss., nipped reigning Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series champion Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., by .11 seconds on the final lap for $2,000 and his first series victory.
Quotable: “The right-front brake started to lock up about the middle stages, and we fell off the pace a little bit," Ellis said. "I fiddled with the three-wheel braking a little bit, and that freed everything up with 11 laps to go, and all of a sudden it was like we had a different car.”
Key notes: The race on the tour for primarily CT 525-engine entrants saw five lead changes among three drivers. ... Ellis led laps 37 and 40. ... Johnson was out front on three different occasions for a total of 37 circuits. ... Adam Martin led lap 11 before fading to a sixth-place finish. ... The winner struggled with brake issues in the middle stages of the feature, but made an adjustment under caution with 11 laps remaining. ... Polesittter Ryan King spun in the opening corners on the first lap, triggering a multi-car melee. ... Another scramble occurred on the third lap when Eric Cooley when airborne over the front of Ryan Colby's car. ... Ronny Lee Hollingsworth won the night's Super Late Model feature and Chase Washington won the Crate feature.
On the move: Tyler Crowder stormed from 22nd to finish fourth; Mario Gresham rallied from 19th to complete the top five.
Winner's sponsors: Ellis has a Barry Wright Race Car using a GM 604 engine with sponsorship from Flurry Auto Repair, Ellis Certified Welding, Extreme Graphics and 18 Inc.
