Mark Whitener takes the checkers and $5,000 at Golden Isles.
What won the race: Outside front-row starter Mark Whitener led all the way in Golden Isles Speedway's East Coast Mid-Season Championship, beating fellow Middleburg, Fla., driver Jason Fitzgerald to the checkers for a $5,000 victory on the Southern Thunder Late Model Series.
Key notes: Whitener became the tour's first repeat winner in nine series events and has a series-leading five career victories. ... Runner-up Jason Fitzgerald drove the No. C2 normally driven by Cale Simons. ... Ivedent Lloyd Jr., driving David Clegg's No. 07, ran second until exiting after 11 laps. ... Nine drivers completed 40 laps. ... The weekend was originally set as an Oglethorpe-Golden Isles doubleheader, but the track near Brunswick, Ga., took over the weekend with a two-day show paying $5,000-to-win.
