Jared Hawkins made a last-lap pass at Tyler County for a $5,000 payday.
What won the race: Rallying from his 14th starting spot, Jared Hawkins of Fairmont, W.Va., made a dive-bombing pass of polesitter Jeremy Berwanger on the last of 44 laps Saturday at Tyler County Speedway for his series-leading sixth career UFO Race Championship Series victory. Jared Miley of South Park, Pa., finished second in a wild finish while Berwanger settled for third.
Quotable: "On that restart, he gave it to me, so I figured it was fair game on that last lap," said Hawkins, whose brother Jacob won the lucrative modified portion of the program. "Jeremy's a good guy, a good racer, so is Jared (Miley). I'm glad to get it done. I couldn't let Jacob outdo me."
Key notes: A caution flag with five laps remaining — the race's second slowdown — set up the double-file restart that decided the race. ... With Berwanger leading and restarting on the inside and Hawkins taking the green on the outside, the two drivers touched and then Berwanger stopped Hawkins’s outward momentum on the backstretch. Going into the final turn on the last lap, Hawkins switched his lane to the inside, came up beside Berwanger, slid up and carried Berwanger to the extreme outside of the track. Hawkins crossed the line first, with Miley passing Berwanger at the line as he recovered to finish third. ... Paul Wilmoth Jr. led the race's first 21 laps before Berwanger gained control. ... Saturday's event marked the second of two $5,000-to-win Late Model events during the Mega 100 weekend, which was highlighted by a $12,000-to-win modified event for the Renegades of Dirt. Hawkins's brother, Jacob, won the modified special, leading all 100 laps to push his winning take to over $16,000 including lap money. ... Friday night's top 12 Late Model finishers were inverted and locked into Saturday's main event; Tim Dohm won Friday.
