Jeff Aikey (77), who rallied from 15th, overtakes Richie Gustin.
What won the race: Marching forward from the 15th starting position, seven-time series champ Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls, Iowa, raced to victory in the Deery Brothers Summer Series visit to Boone Speedway's IMCA Super Nationals for the third straight year. Aikey topped front-row starters Justin Kay and Richie Gustin in a back-and-forth race with four leaders, ending Kay's three-race winning streak.
Quotable: “I’ve been racing for a long time. To beat these young guys feels pretty good,” said the 52-year-old Aikey, the tour's all-time winningest driver with 65 victories. “I just went where they weren’t. My car could go anywhere on the track. I diced where there weren’t any other cars.”
Key notes: Aikey, who led the final four laps, won with the IMCA tour for the second time in 2015 with his previous triumph coming May 3 at Quad City Speedway in East Moline, Ill. ... Richie Gustin overtook Justin Kay on an early restart, but the 10th-starting Todd Cooney took over on lap 17. ... Aikey went ahead on lap 34, Cooney spun out of third on lap 39 and Gustin regained the lead with 10 laps remaining but lost the late duel with Aikey ... Jon Passick spun on the third lap. ... Sean Johnson looped on the 16th circuit; Josh Most spun out of fifth on the ensuing restart. ... The event was originally scheduled for Monday but weather shifted the event to Thursday, where Mother Nature threatened once again.
On the move: The winner started 15th. ... Fifth-place finisher Joel Callahan advanced from 14th.
Winner's sponsors: Aikey's MasterSbilt Race Car has an AEM engine with sponsorship from Fleck & Son Trucking, Can-Am Automotive & Towing, Strange Oval, Dentsmart and Aikey Auto Salvage.
Points chase: Kay extended his points lead over Andy Nezworski and is closing in on his second straight title.
