What won the race: Corey Gordon of Charlotte, N.C., kicked off the Fastrak World Championship weekend at Virginia Motor Speedway in fine fashion, registering the biggest victory of his career in the 40-lap Fastrak World Challenge preliminary feature. He surged off the outside pole to grab the lead at the initial green flag and paced the entire distance, surviving several restarts to defeat David Smith of Inman, S.C., by 2.548 seconds.
Quotable: "I wanted to just pack up and go home after breaking the driveshaft earlier in the day," Gordon said. "I have to thank Tedd Tate for helping with another driveshaft."
Key notes: Gordon's evening started on a rough note when he broke a driveshaft in practice, but after fixing his machine he was flawless for the remainder of the night. ... Smith spent the race's final laps fighting to turn back challenges from eventual third-place finisher Matt Long. ... Veteran Virginia racer Booper Bare was among the entrants, racing in a field that included his son Tyler. ... Virginia Motor welcomed Fastrak competitors for their richest weekend of the season. ... The weekend includes complete programs of hot laps, qualifying, heat races, consolation races and a feature event on both Friday and Saturday. ... Saturday's 60-lap finale pays $15,000-to-win. ... James River Equipment is the event's presenting sponsor. ... Only a Nov. 14 stop in Lavonia, Ga., remains on the tour's schedule following VMS.
On the move: Jared Powell of Charlottesville, Va., advanced from the 21st starting spot to finish ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Gordon's Barry Wright Race Car carries sponsorship from Carver & Sons Roofing Inc., Creech's D.J. Service and Wurth.
