Andy Fries heads for his first career Steel Block Bandits victory.
What won the race: Two-time and reigning series champion Andy Fries of Mercersburg, Pa., overtook the ailing car of polesitter and race-long leader Larry Ramsey of Lexington, Va., on the last of 30 laps for his first career Steel Block Bandits victory. The rear end on Ramsey's car gave up on the last lap and he got into the frontstretch guardrail at the finish.
Key notes: Ramsey fought off challenges from third-starting Walker Arthur early before Fries got into the contention from his sixth starting spot. ... Fries won series titles in 2012-13, both winless seasons on the series. ... Daniel Snead's No. 08 suffered heavy damage when he barrel-rolled in the feature; no injuries were reported. ... Billy Beachler and Kris Holliday scratched from the feature. ... Randall Paxton of Dalton, Pa., received the LWR Builders Longest Tow award (334 miles), picking up $100. ... Saturday's Dana Dove Memorial at Natural Bridge (Va.) Speedway was rained out and no makeup date was immediately announced.
On the move: Jared Powell of Charlottesville, Va., came from his 14th starting spot to finish seventh; hometown driver Greg Roberson pitted early to check on a fluid leak and rallied to finish fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Fries is sponsored by AC Custom Detailing, All About Doors, Bolt On Racing Bumpers, Diversified Investment Solutions, D&D Auto Recycling, Farmers Union Co-op, Hershey's Racing Engines, HTMA, Liberty Auto & Tire and TC Race Cars.
Points chase: Fries' victory in the Bandits' season-opening event lifts him to the early points lead.
Car count: 21
Heat race winners: Andy Fries, Joey Leavell, Denny Bonebrake
Next series race: June 27, Natural Bridge Speedway (Natural Bridge, VA) $1,500
Editor's note: Results and race details are unofficial.
