What won the race: Polesitter Donald McIntosh, despite feeling under the weather, grabbed a $5,000 Ultimate Super Late Model Series victory Saturday for his first victory at Smoky Mountain Speedway, the hometown track of Blount Motorsports. The Dawsonville, Ga., driver notched his third career series victory while teammate Tommy Kerr rallied to finish second, nearly five seconds back.
Quotable: "Man, this is so awesome ... to be able to get this for (Blount Motorsports team owner) Larry Garner and the team, as awful as I have run here, (and) I don't feel that great, but this is so awesome," McIntosh said. "I'm not really taking it in as much as I should because I don't feel that great, but man this is awesome. For all these (guys) to put this car back together as many times as I've torn it up here, to come out with a win. ... for Tommy to come in second, this is cool."
Key notes: McIntosh won two Ultimate events last season. ... Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., spun out of second challenging McIntosh for the lead on the 11th lap. Ferguson dove under a lapped car and McIntosh in turn one and lost control. "Sometimes you just try too hard," said Ferguson, who rallied from the rear to salvage a ninth-place finish ... Second-running Casey Roberts retired with mechanical problems on the seventh lap. ... Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., returned to his former Vanover Concrete ride but didn't make the feature lineup. ... Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, S.C., likely ended his consideration of a World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series rookie run by attending the Smoky Mountain event. ... Ultimate's fledgling Battle of the Bluegrass Series co-sanctioned the event.
On the move: Tommy Kerr started 11th and finished second.
Winner's sponsors: McIntosh drives a Blount Motorsports Rocket Chassis with a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsorshipo from Stowers (CAT) Machinery Corp., Arnold Trucking, Blount Excavating, Cherokee Millwright, Food City, GEO Services, Insurance Partners, Massey Electric, Tennessee RV, Turner Hydraulics, VP Race Fuels and Wine and Spirits Cellar.
