Duane Chamberlain captured Eldora's first Late Model event of 2016.
What won the race: Outside polesitter Duane Chamberlain of Richmond, Ind., jumped to the green flag at the drop of the green flag, leading the entire 25-lap distance for a $2,000 Sunoco American Late Model Series victory in Eldora Speedway's season-opener. He survived Jeep Van Wormer's first-lap slide job attempt in grabbing the victory.
Quotable: “It was a big cushion and we were able to hold it wide open,” Chamberlain said. “I got in the wall a bit and it took some air off the car and I think it helped us out. I want to thank Bill Dues and the St. Henry Nite Club. I wouldn’t be here without them and hopefully this is the beginning of a really good season.”
Key notes: Chamberlain scored his fifth career ALMS victory and the first win of his 2016 campaign. ... The Indiana driver's victory comes after a runner-up finish in Friday's Battle of the Bluegrass event at Moler Raceway Park. ... Devin Moran started 10th and crossed the finish line in second, but was disqualified for a non-conforming tire. ... Eldora opened its 63rd season. ... Rusty Schlenk won last year's April ALMS at Eldora; he finished fifth.
On the move: Josh Rice of Verona, Ky., rallied from the 18th starting spot to finish ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Chamberlain's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by St. Henry Nite Club, Belna Petroluem, Creekside of Versailles, Ohio, and Ron's Service.
Points chase: Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., leads ALMS points after two events, but was not on hand for Saturday's race at Eldora.
