Kip Hughes picked up $750 in the first Sooner Series event.
What won the race: Kip Hughes of Enid, Okla., fought off Shannon Scott's challenges at Southern Oklahoma Speedway to capture the first-ever race on the Sooner Late Model Series. Hughes earned $750 in the Oklahoma tour opener.
Quotable: “This is just great,” Hughes said. “To have this good of a car count (22) on the first race is something special and I’m proud to be a part of this deal. I think it’s going to be a great thing for Late Model racing here in Oklahoma. The track dried out a little bit but was still very racy. I knew Scott was down there (in turn two) and I just kept my momentum up and it all worked out.”
Key notes: Hughes started on the pole alongside Phil Miller. ... Because of frequent cautions, the feature was cut to 17 laps. ... Shannon Scott finished three lengths behind the winner.
On the move: Dalton Ragsdale of Fort Gibson, Okla., started seventh and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Mac Tools, Pat McVicker Oil Field Service, Hinchman, WRP and Deatherage Opticians.
Car count: 22
Polesitter: Kip Hughes
Heat race winners: Jay Sale, Nate Jantz, Kip Hughes
Next series race: April 30, Oklahoma Sports Park (Ada, OK) $750
