Michael Chilton heads to victory at Ponderosa Speedway.
What won the race: Regaining the lead from Cody Mahoney with a daring outside pass exiting turn four, Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., registered his first victory on the Old Man's Garage Spring Nationals circuit Friday at Ponderosa Speedway. He earned $4,000 in the 40-lapper.
Quotable: "I've run a lot of these races for points in the past two or three years, but we've stepped back a little bit as the series expanded into other areas," Chilton said. "It got to be too much work and travel for us, but it's always good to win one of Ray Cook's races because he's an excellent promoter. It's also especially nice to win one here at our home track. It's the biggest race we've ever won here."
Key notes: Cody Mahoney took the lead from Michael Chilton early, but Chilton swept back around several laps later; Mahoney later fell from contention with a lap-21 flat tire. ... Runner-up Jason Jameson went to the tail after pitting early but rallied back to second. ... Third-finishing Eddie Carrier Jr. ran most of the race after losing his brakes. ... Chris Combs spun entering turn one for an early caution. ... Tommy Bailey was back in action after missing time while awaiting replacement engine parts. ... Action was twice delayed because of power outages. ... Some drivers, including Brandon Kinzer and Mike Marlar, elected to load up rather the compete on a rugged track surface.
Winner's sponsors: Chilton's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Central Painting, Chilton's Lawn Maintenance, Caton Industrial Printing and Genesis Shocks.
Points chase: Entering the event, Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., had 934 points to lead David Payne (894) and Chris Madden (770).
