What won the race: Polesitter Jesse Stovall of Billings, Mo., led all 30 laps to outrun eighth-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, for a $3,000 Alphabet Soup Classic victory at I-80 Speedway. Stovall crossed the finish line 1.421 seconds ahead of Simpson.
Quotable: "I was a little concerned about every one of them (restarts)," said Stovall, who had to deal with four caution flags that tightened the field. "Chad, Terry (Phillips) and Jason (Krohn) are all really good racers. I didn't know quite what to do entering that last (fourth) corner, but I guess on the last restart (with eight laps remaining) I did things like I needed to and got to driving away again."
Key notes: Stovall earned his second Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association victory of the year; the 15th annual event was co-sanctioned by MARS DIRTcar Series and the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series. ... It was Stovall's first MLRA points-race triumph at I-80. ... Simpson settled for runner-up money; he said he "really good" in turns three and four but just "couldn't get through (turns) one and two like I needed." ... Jason Krohn challenged Stovall for the lead late in the distance, getting underneath the pacesetter several times before retiring with mechanical trouble. ... Nineteen of the 23 starters finished the 30-lap feature.
On the move: Jason Papich of Arroyo Grande, Calif., started 15th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Stovall's Black Diamond No. 00 has a Scott Bailey Racing Engine and is sponsored by Malvern Trust & Savings Bank, Midwest Sheet Metal, Rusin Towing, Swafford's Service and Hoosier Racing Tire.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Stovall led the MLRA standings, Tony Jackson Jr. led the MARS points and Bobby Pierce led the Corn Belt Clash standings; Pierce did not compete Friday.
