A relieved Terry Phillips in victory lane after regaining the lead late.
What won the race: After losing the lead with four laps remaining, polesitter Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., regained the lead from a high-running Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., on the final lap to win the 14th annual Tony Roper Memorial. Jackson stole the lead from Phillips on a lap-26 restart, but when Jackson got too high in turns one and two on the final lap, Phillips went back past for his 85th career MARS victory.
Quotable: "I was running the bottom pretty good, and I started getting tight later in the race. But I didn't know what to do. Sometimes when you're in the lead, you're kind of a sitting duck," Phillips said. "I kept looking at the cushion and wondering if it was going to come in ... he drove it hard and got by me, and then it looked like he drove it hard and jumped the cushion."
Key notes: A capacity crowd filed in for the event. ... The event drew many of the same drivers who spent the weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the Lucas Oil Show-Me 100. ... Saturday was the 14th running of the event that honors the Springfield, Mo., dirt racer who moved to asphalt racing; he died after injuries suffered in a NASCAR truck race in Texas. ... MARS competitors made their second of four visits to Monett; they will return July 3 and Aug. 31.
On the move: Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Ark., advanced four positions for a third-place finish.
Winner's sponsors: Phillips drives a Hatfield-powered Rocket Chassis sponsored by Andy's Frozen Custard, Champion Brands, Don Babb Motorsports, Integra Shocks, Keyser Manufacturing, Mesilla Valley Transportation and New Vision Graphics.
Points chase: Jackson has 608 points to led Justin Asplin (573) and Jesse Stovall (534); Phillips is fourth in the standings with 499 points.
