Mike Marlar (157) battled Terry English (96) throughout 50 laps.
What won the race: Stalking the leader all race long, fourth-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., made the winning pass exiting turn four on the final lap, denying outside front-row starter Terry English of Benton, Ky., a $5,000 victory. Marlar came in low in turn four, the frontrunners touched, and Marlar won by a half-length at the flagstand.
Quotable: “Terry had the preferred line and he was doing all the right things there. For 49 laps, he ran the high side, and he took that low corner there,” Marlar said. “We did a way more rubbin’ than I ever like to do. I don’t like to be laying on a guy like that. But he went to the bottom and I was committed. I was like 'Oh man!' I was trying to hit him and keep him straight and everything else so I didn’t spin him. It just came out crazy. It was a fun race.”
Key notes: Runner-up Terry English said his car's handling was going away late. "I figured it was coming; I just wish he'd have let me run him down the front straightaway there on the checkered," he said. ... Marlar, who came to Duck River after finishing sixth in the Show-Me 100 in Wheatland, Mo., missed hot laps while swapping a transmission. ... Eleven drivers finished on the lead lap. ... Riley Hickman, who started 10th, ran as high as third but ended up fourth. ... Kenny Collins, Eric Hickerson and Brad Skinner ran among the top five in the first half of the race before falling from contention; Collins broke a right-rear axle to draw a lap-31 caution. ... Other cautions: David Gentry spun (lap 13), Tanner English broke (lap 14), Brad Skinner spun (lap 21) and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth hit wall (lap 30). ... The 50-lapper isn't part of the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series, which begins in July, but it's officiated by the same Ray Cook-led crew that operates that tour and the Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals. ... The crowd wasn't quite as large as the record-setting draw for the World of Outlaws a weekend earlier, but fans appreciated the fireworks show at intermission.
On the move: A high-running Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., rallied from 13th to finish third.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Delk Equipment Sales, RS Trading and GW Performance.
