Aussie Craig Vosbergen emerges after his first U.S. victory.
What won the race: Surviving 11 cautions and a scrape in traffic, Australian invader Craig Vosbergen led all 35 laps from the pole Thursday at Crossville Speedway to capture his first U.S. feature victory. The Perth, Western Australian, driver earned $3,500 in becoming the sixth first-time Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals victory on the Ray Cook-promoted tour, thanking hometown driver Randy Weaver for pointing him in the right direction.
Quotable: "We've won a couple of $10,000-to-win shows back in Australia, and we've won nearly every big show they have back home, but this is by far the biggest victory we've ever had. We've been coming over to run this series for three years now, and we've worked really hard to reach this goal, and it's the biggest accomplishment we've ever had in racing. Yeah, there's no doubt about it."
Key notes: Vosbergen has been a frequent competitor in the United States in recent seasons in UMP DIRTcar Summernationals and Southern Nationals competition. ... Donald McIntosh ran second most of the way before retiring. ... The feature was slowed by 11 cautions, with Vosbergen restored to the point after a tangle with lapped cars in turns three and four. ... Ryan King, in the Warrior house car, momentarily got under Vosbergen late but finished third behind Ricky Weiss. ... Vic Hill was a victim of the King-Weiss battle with four laps remaining; Hill's car was towed away. ... Crossville marked the first of three straight Tennessee events wrap up Ray Cook's Southern Nationals. ... Crossville hosted the tour for the first time since 2009. ... Seven drivers have now won in eight Southern Nationals events, including six first-time series winners.
On the move: Weiss rallied from 11th to post a runner-up finish in the 35-lapper.
Winner's sponsors: Vosbergen's No. 8 is sponsored by Tennessee RV, Maxima Oils and FK Rod Ends.
Points chase: With two races remaining, Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., has 1,393 points to lead Ricky Weiss (1,381) and Shanon Buckingham (1,377).
