Jonathan Davenport holds his $3,000 Fastrak Racing Series first-place check at Virginia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Surviving an opening-lap restart tangle that sent him spinning but didn't force him to the rear of the field, Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., raced to a flag-to-flag Crate Late Model victory in the 40-lap Fastrak Racing Series feature. He bolted into the lead off the outside pole when the A-main resumed and was never seriously challenged en route to beating Tyler Bare of Rockbridge Baths, Va., by 2.896 seconds for a $3,000 paycheck.
Quotable: “We’re off to a good start with our Chevrolet Performance Circle Track Engine (Crate) program as we’re three for three so far,” said Davenport, who began his latest stint with the Barry Wright house car team last fall with two Crate Late Model victories. “Now if we could just get some of that success to rub off on our Super Late Model program we would be in good shape.”
Key notes: Davenport's machine sustained damage to its left-side door when he was sent spinning in turn two in the opening-lap incident that involved nearly a dozen cars and brought out a red flag, but all drivers who continued without pitting were able to restart in their original spots because no laps were complete. ... The victory was Davenport's first of the 2017 season. ... The Crate Late Model action was on the undercard of the $20,000-to-win Ultimate Super Late Model Series-sanctioned Aaron's King of the Commonwealth event won by Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga. Davenport finished fourth in the 60-lap Super Late Model race. ... Davenport joined Walker Arthur and Justin Mitchell in entering both the Super and Crate Late Model events. ... Five caution flags slowed the feature.
On the move: David Williams of Mechanicsville, Md., advanced from the 19th starting spot to finish ninth.
