Brad Skinner notched his first career Southern All Star victory.
What won the race: Brad Skinner of Spring Hill, Tenn., slipped by race leader David Seibers of Chapel Hill, Tenn., in traffic near the halfway mark of the 40-lapper and then held off a fast closing Dane Dacus of Lakeland, Tenn., over the final five laps to win his first-ever Southern All Stars feature, collecting a popular victory at his home track. Skinner earned $4,000 for the win.
Quotable: “(Traffic) wasn't kind. You didn't really know," said Skinner. "All you could try to do is get by 'em and bide your time. I think me and one lapped car got together on the front straightaway, but that's racing. I could hear (Dane Dacus). When it gets slick like this, Dane is top-notch, probably one of the best drivers out there in the slick. I know every lap I was having to peddle up, peddle up … come up off the peddle, come up off the peddle. Then I got to hearing somebody and I was like, ‘I got to do something … get down here and block somebody or something.’ I’d probably tore both of our cars up just to win.”
Key notes: Skinner took the lead on lap 12 but couldn't hang on to it. After a back-and-forth battle with David Seibers, Skinner took the lead for good on lap 18. ... Skinner was driving a two-race-old Rocket that he just finished putting together after flipping wildly at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn., five weeks ago. ... Josh Putnam was driving Mark Fields's car. Putnam and Fields were the winners of the two SAS races at Thunderhill last season. ... Mark Dowdy broke a J-bar in practice. ... The track returned to the series schedule last season for the first time since 2001. ... ... Southern All Stars competitors made the first of three stops at Thunderhill on the 2017 season. The series returns on July 8 and Sept. 2.
Winner's sponsors: Skinner's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Dixon Plumbing, AFCO Technologies, Trace Construction, Lazy Hog Barbecue and Peterson & Son.
Points chase: Entering Saturday's event, Bo Shirley of Gadsen, Ala., tops the standings with 466 points over Austin Horton (462) and T.J. Reaid (418).
