J.R. Toner picked up his first Mason-Dixon series victory.
What won the race: Leading flag-to-flag after starting from the pole, J.R. Toner of Bellefonte, Pa., picked up his first Mason-Dixon Shootout Series victory Friday at Clinton County Motor Speedway, beating Derick Quade to the finish line by a scant 0.182 of a second.
Quotable: “Track position was a key tonight, I got lucky with the draw,” said Toner, who drew the pole for the feature. “The car really worked great on the high part of the race track, plus we went soft on tires and where able to hang on till the end. I have to thank (Derick) Quade there on the last lap. We ran out of room coming off the last turn and it was pretty tight and he gave me enough room.”
Key notes: The race was slowed by only one caution. The yellow waved on lap one for Luke Hoffner whose car was smoking and a tangle that involved Gary Mellott and Jeremy Ohl. … Derrick Quade passed Eric Irvin for second on lap 22 and made a late race run at Toner. … This was the first of two stops at Clinton County this season for the first-year tour. ... The series returns on Aug. 18.
Winner's sponsors: Toner's Rocket Chassis has a Miller Racing Engine with sponsorship from Abel Signs, Eagle Towing & Recovery, Hendershot's Heating and Cooling Solutions, RCR and Strouse Electric.
