Cory Hedgecock talks about his flag-to-flag Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series victory at Dixie Speedway.
What won the race: Starting from the pole, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., got the jump at the start and led all 50 laps to claim a victory with the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series at Dixie Speedway, outrunning Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., to the checkered flag after a caution slowed the action with six laps remaining. The win was worth $3,000.
Quotable: "The car was awesome. This thing I think was better than the 604 car," said Hedgecock. "Something was going wrong in the motor. Not sure if it wasn't knocking a bearing out or something. I couldn't see even it was vibrating so hard going down the straightaway. Not sure if it wasn't trying to pitch the driveshaft out or (if it was) the motor. It was just not happy. I just kept counting the laps down, saying let's get to 50."
Key notes: This marked the first-ever appearance by the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series at famed Dixie Speedway. … Earlier in the night, Hedgecock won the feature for NeSmith Late Model Series for Crate Late Models, which paid $2,500 to win, giving him a $5,500 night. … Oliver Gentry was the first retiree after bringing out a caution before completing a lap. ... The race was slowed by five cautions. Along with Gentry's spin on the opening circuit, cautions waved on lap 13, 34, 35 and 44 as well. ... The series had a May 13 race at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City postponed.
On the move: Improving six positions, John Ownbey of Cleveland, Tenn., started 10th and finished fourth, and Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., started 11th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Hedgecock's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Cushman and Valley Transport.
Points chase: Rookie of the Year contender Devin Dixon currently leads the national points by eight over Dixie Speedway regular Austin Smith.
