Tracy Denby Jr. gets rolling at Cotton Bowl Speedway.
What won the race: Taking the lead when Brandon Brzozowski faded with brake problems midway, third-starting Tracy Denby Jr. of Vidor, Texas, raced to his first Southern Texas Late Model Series victory Saturday at Cotton Bowl Speedway.
Quotable: “Survival, that was the key,” Denby said. “We got tore up on the first lap bad. I don't know what it bent on the right front, but we just hung in there and made it through. I thought we were done. I thought I'd just ride around and see what we could get. It didn't handle half bad. iI was a handful though, but it was competitive enough to get it done.”
Key notes: Denby won by a half-straightaway. ... Denby's car sustained damage in a pileup on the initial start that involved half the field. ... Series points leader Jim Moon and J.P. Dowell were early retirees.
On the move: Robert Scrivner of Waco, Texas, started 10th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Denby's Barry Wright Race Car is powered by a C.D. Race Engine and is sponsored by Geaux 24/7 Safety, B&D Construction, Schaeffer Oil, Seals Transmission, Brown's Trucking.
Points chase: Entering the Cotton Bowl event, Jim Moon had 722 points to lead G.W. Egbert IV (649) and Austin Theiss (607).
