What won the race: Jason Fitzgerald of Middleburg, Fla., slipped by Jimmy Sharpe Jr. of Soperton, Ga., as they raced to the stripe on the final lap to win Monday's fourth annual Georgia Showdown with the Southern Thunder Late Model Series at Cochran Motor Speedway. Fitzgerald's last-lap pass netted him $3,000.
Quotable: “Luckily we just got racing hard and it worked out for me this time,” Fitzgerald said. “We all was right there together and I kinda seen where Dalton (Cook) was gonna try to drive in there and get a run on (Sharpe), which is the same thing I would have done. Basically if I didn’t overshoot the corner I had a chance, and that’s just what we did. We just slowed down and stayed in the bottom and got a little bit of a better run off than they did, just because he went in there and was sliding a little bit.”
Key notes: Fitzgerald, Sharpe and Cook made contact as they crossed the finish line, resulting in the three spinning down the frontstretch. ... Fitzgerald won by .233 of a second. ... Twenty of the 24 starters finished the race, with 19 still running on the lead lap at the end of the 40-lapper. ... Travis Pennington retired after completing only one lap. ... This was the first race of the Southern Thunder’s Summer Shootout Series. … The miniseries continues with East Alabama Motor Speedway’s $2,000-to-win Bama Brawl on July 15 and the $3,000-to-win Summer Sizzler at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga., on July 22.
Winner's sponsors: Fitzgerald’s James Simons-owned Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Southway Crane, Mills Concrete and Fitz Factory.
