Dillon Stake won Friday's Mason-Dixon race at Clinton County.
What won the race: Dillan Stake of Three Springs, Pa., barely held off series points leader Ralph Morgan Friday at Clinton County Motor Speedway in capturing his second straight Mason-Dixon Shootout Series victory. Morgan, who started 12th, was 12-hundredths of a second behind at the checkers while J.R. Toner, the tour's previous winner at the track, retired after leading the first two laps, handing the point to Stake.
Quotable: “From the way the night started till now I could not have asked for a better night,” Stake said. “I saw that someone was on my outside late in the race twice, but I was not getting off the bottom of the track. There was more moisture there for me to run.”
Key notes: Stake won despite his car bottoming out and bending the skid plate, causing steering rack problems. … Stake inherited the lead on the third lap when leader J.R. Toner's bicycled in turn three and nearly flipped; he slid into a rock pile off turn four. … Six cautions in the first four laps slowed action. … Stake held off Morgan following a caution with two laps remaining. … Morgan passed second-running Robbie Black near the halfway point and began to challenge Stake. … Black later retired and was credited with 14th place. ... Stake's previous series victory came July 21 at Dog Hollow Speedway in Strongstown, Pa.. ... Eleven starters finished on the lead lap. ... Clinton County returned to action after two weeks off because of rain.
On the move: Eric Irvin of Petersburg, Pa., started 22nd and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Stake's Brantner Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by a Barron Racing Engine and sponsored by Garlock's Used Cars, Wayne's Water Conditioning, Mountain View Custom Services and Wagner Excavating.
Points chase: Entering the event, Ralph Morgan Jr. of Mount Union, Pa. led the series points by 15 over Eric Irvin of Petersburg, Pa., and 22 over Andrew Yoder of Middleburg, Pa.
