What won the race: Third-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., outran fifth-starting Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., going on to earn the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series victory at Rome Speedway for the $5,300 payday.
Quotable: “We’ve been out racing a lot this summer. We’ve been all the way up by Canada and just all over the Midwest … you know, a lot of different race tracks,” said Marlar. “I think it helps you adapt or being able to adjust our car accordingly at some of these race tracks and it seems to be working and we’ve got a good (setup) package.”
Key notes: Marlar won by more than two seconds. ... The victory was Marlar's fourth carer Southern Nationals Bonus Series victory. ... Seventeen of the 23 starters finished the race with 16 completing all 53 laps. ... This was the second race of a weekend doubleheader. … The series was at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth on Saturday night. … Marlar also won Saturday. ... Sunday’s race was originally scheduled as part of the Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals, but was rained out in July. Deciding to go ahead and wrap up the Summer Nationals, series officials rescheduled the event, adding it instead to the slate of the Southern Nationals sister series. Both are promoted by Brasstown, N.C., racer Ray Cook.
On the move: Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., finished 12th after using a provisional to start 23rd.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Delk Equipment Sales and RS Trading Co.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, David Payne (908 points) of Murphy, N.C., held the series point lead over Donald McIntosh (906), Jamie Oliver (524), Joey Standridge (518) and Zack Dohm (386).
