Ross Bailes gets up to speed in the Billy Hicks car at Fayetteville.
What won the race: Regaining the lead from Chris Ferguson on a lap-30 restart, Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., led the rest of the way at Fayetteville Motor Speedway for his second victory in 24 hours. Bailes, who earned $4,000 for his Carolina Clash victory, added it to an Ultimate Southeast triumph on Friday in Laurens, S.C.
Quotable: “He (Ferguson) found something up there and drove it better than I did,” Bailes told the Fayetteville Observer. "Then I started running his line and I figured out a little bit different line than what he was running and I was able to close in on him a little bit. That restart (on lap 30), I was, ‘I’m going to give it all I’ve got.' He messed up and I got back by him.”
Key notes: Ross Bailes won his second Carolina Clash race of the season and 10th of his career. His previous series victory in 2017 came at Cherokee Speedway. ... At Fayetteville, Bailes led laps 1-21 and 31-40 with runner-up Ferguson pacing the other nine laps. ... Ferguson struggled with his power steering, which deteriorated steadily and failed altogether in the final 15 laps. ... Bailes was fielding a Billy Hicks car after piloting the Barry Wright Race Cars house car the previous weekend. (Tony Jackson Jr. was in the BWRC ride this weekend in MARS West competition). ... Eight drivers finished on the lead lap. ... Dustin Mitchell won Fayetteville's Limited Late Model feature.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes drives a Billy Hicks-owned Longhorn Chassis with a Kenny Lamb Race Engine and sponsorship from H&H Auto Sales, Bailes Construction, AKW Electrical Contractors and FK Rod Ends.
Points chase: Entering the event, Zack Mitchell (943 points) led Johnny Pursley (888), Jeff Smith (844), Michael Brown (836) and Scott Shirey (771).
