Phil Potts gets rolling before his first-ever Ohsweken victory.
What won the race: Eighth-starting Phil Potts of Brighton, Ontario, overtook poleisster Mike Maresca on a lap-11 restart and raced to his first career victory at Ohsweken Speedway. Potts earned $2,000 in the Crate Late Model event on the Go Nuclear Late Model Series in taking the checkers ahead of Charlie Sandercock and Steve Baldwin.
Quotable: “We didn’t expect an outcome this good tonight. I always hope to take a top-five home, but in the heat race when we started fourth and we won it and then when I redrew eighth in the feature, we were in third within five laps so I knew we had a good car,” Potts said. “I was really good in the middle and low. The car was fast and I drove the wheels right off it. Without my guys, I wouldn’t be here tonight.”
Key notes: A lap-five pileup turned into a red flag and, then, a rain delay with cars remaining on the track to try and keep it dry enough to race; when the rain stopped, cars refueled and returned to the track to finish the final 15 laps. ... Runner-up Charlie Sandercock started second and slipped back as far as sixth before rallying, taking the second spot from Steve Baldwin with two laps remaining. ... The Crate Late Model series was on the card with the Super DIRTcar Series big-block modifieds and 360 sprint cars.
On the move: Mike Greene started 22nd and finished 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Phil Potts is sponsored by Vanderlaan Building Products, Brighton Recycling, Indewey Excavating, Bay Marine, Orange Motorsports, On Time Body and Graphic, Crow Design, Bill’s Johns, K-D Transmission, Image Factor Media and Clayton Johns Media.
