Randy Timms heads to his second straight MLRA victory at Lucas Oil Speedway.
What won the race: Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla., picked up his second straight Lucas Oil MLRA tour win in Friday night's 40-lap Fall Nationals opener at Lucas Oil Speedway. He grabbed the lead on lap two from Brent Larson of Lake Elmos, Minn., and went on to defeat Cade Dillard of Many, La., and Larson for the $3,000 top prize.
Quotable: "I felt like I was conserving (tires) pretty good," Timms said. "I could tell Cade was kind of coming in to me (late), but I knew it was going to be tough to pass. I just stayed patient and tried to keep a gap."
Key notes: Timms previously won at Lucas Oil Speedway in MLRA action on Sept. 2. ... Dillard, the USMTS Modified Central and Southern Region champion in 2017, impressed in his debut behind the wheel of a new MB Custom Late Model. "We got up to second there and I started running him down and making up a lot of ground and I burned the brakes off it," said the 26-year-old Dillard, who made his third career Dirt Late Model start. "I was riding them way too hard. The last seven or eight laps they were to the floor." ... Third-starting Jesse Stovall hit the wall on lap nine. ... Dave Eckrich changed engines after hot laps and finished 14th in the main event. ... Series points leader Terry Phillips finished sixth. ... It was the weekend opener of back-to-back races at Lucas Oil Speedway that will close out the ’17 season. The track has hosted the tour seven times this season, including four co-santioned with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
Winner's sponsors: Timms drives a Black Diamond Chassis powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Western Flyer Express, Malvern Brank and driveWFX.com.
Points chase: Series points leader Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., finished sixth, but it was a good night for the veteran who has all but wrapped up a fourth MLRA championship. He pushed his points lead to 54 markers over Rodney Sanders, who finished 10th.
