Ricky Elliott crosses the stripe to complete his win in the Delaware State Championship.
What won the race: Patiently working the bottom of the track, Ricky Elliott of Seaford, Del., stalked Delaware International Speedway track champion Ross Robinson of Georgetown, Del., for 42 laps before finally securing the lead. Pulling even with the race-long leader on lap 43, Elliott slipped by Robinson in turn two on the next lap and led the rest of the way for his fourth victory of the season at DIS. Elliott earned $5,000 in winning the 50-lap Delaware State Dirt Track Championship. Mark Pettyjohn rallied to finish third after an early spin.
Quotable: “I needed the top (of the track) to burn off. I was too tight to run the top,” said Elliott. “So we just kept pluggin’ on the bottom, pluggin’ on the bottom, pluggin’ on the bottom and either the track was going away enough on the top or (the bottom) was coming to us on the end. It was a heck of a race.”
Key notes: Elliott dedicated the win to his dad, who he said had been in the hospital for “about 21 days.” “This is for him. You know my prayers are with him, I love him to death and hopefully this will help him a little bit,” added the race winner. ... Pettyjohn. He rallied back to third. … When Herb Tunis slowed with engine trouble on lap 15, only eight of the 17 starters remained on the track. ... After a long green flag run of close to 30 laps, the engine in Elliot's car was noticeably puffing steam out of its overflow in victory lane. ... It was the last race of the season at Delaware. … Elliott also won a $3,000-to-win Battle of the Bay main event at DIS on April 27. ... Joey Warren won the Crate Late Model feature.
