Mike Spatola heads to Saturday's Kokomo Klash victory.
What won the race: Fifth-starting Mike Spatola of Manhattan, Ill., went from third to first in traffic, passing both John Provenzano and Jared Bailey on lap 12. Spatola then outran Bailey of Heltonville, Ind., and Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., for a 25-lap victory in the Kokomo Klash XI at Kokomo Speedway. Spatola collected $2,117 for the win.
Quotable: “We went harder on tires there. We almost changed it in the lineup chute and then I remember last year that’s what we did and we should’ve stuck with our first decision,” said Spatola. “It cost us the race (last year). The car was awesome tonight. I felt like I can go anywhere. I mean anybody could’ve drove this thing and go win. I mean no credit to me … all the credit to the team and Moyer Victory Chassis and all our sponsors.”
Key notes: Spatola finished 3.238 seconds ahead of Bailey. ... Sixteen drivers finished the race, with eight completing all 25 laps. ... John Provenzano grabbed the lead on the opening lap and paced the field for the first 11 laps before checking up to avoid two cars pulling in the infield. ... Provenzano was later caught up in a tangle with the lapped car of Scott Duvall while still running inside the top five. ... A caution for a seven-car melee slowed action on lap two. ... The leaders raced through heavy lapped traffic over the final 10 circuits. ... It was Spatola’s second Kokomo Clash victory. ... Kokomo hosted its lone Late Model special event of the season.
Winner's sponsors: Spatola's Moyer Victory Race Car is powered by a Rhyne Performance Engine and sponsored by Big Daddy Scrap, Health Nutz Natural Foods, B&D Chemical, Steve's Performance, Fastlane Wraps, T&S Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration, Allstar Performanc and Koch's Equipment Company.
