Ricky Elliott poses in victory lane after his $5,000 win at Georgetown.
What won the race: Completing a sweep of his home state's biggest fall events in back-to-back weeks, Ricky Elliott of Seaford, Del., earned $5,000 Saturday in the 40-lap Mid-Atlantic Championship Weekend Super Late Model feature at Georgetown Speedway. The 30-year veteran grabbed the lead from Mark Pettyjohn on lap six and survived a late threat from the charging Austin Hubbard to duplicate his triumph in the previous week's Delaware State Championship event at nearby Delaware International Speedway.
Quotable: “I don’t know where they were behind me, but my guy was telling me on top of the trailer that I had a pretty good lead so I never pressed,” Elliott said. “When I got in lapped traffic I did press a little bit to speed up in case anybody had caught me while I was trying to lap them, but a guy wasn’t gonna drop down and pass you on the bottom because it was top dominant. You know how it is — you run how you need to run to get where you need to go. I was trying trying to save the tires, too, because we were borderline on being too soft.”
Key notes: Hubbard rallied from a lap-14 pit stop to change a tire after slowing to bring out a caution and triggered yellow conditions again when he spun in turn four on lap 17. ... Kyle Hardy finished third after losing the runner-up spot to Hubbard on lap 34. ... Jamie Lathroum slowed on lap five and pitted but rallied to finish fourth in Sommey Lacey's No. 45. ... Mark Pettyjohn finished fifth after leading laps 1-5. ... Nick Davis was running third when he blew a right-rear tire on lap 22. He returned after pitting and finished eighth. ... Danny Snyder escaped injury when his car slipped over the track's berm between turns one and two on lap 14 and rolled onto its roof. ... A surprise entrant was 2017 UMP DIRTcar national champion Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, who brought a brand-new C.J. Rayburn house car to shake down. He was running fifth when he retired before halfway with a bent right-front lower control arm. ... Mike Wharton earned $1,000 for winning the 20-lap RUSH Crate Late Model feature, an event that included a controversial tangle between Hubbard and David Pettyjohn.
On the move: Hubbard started 16th and went to the rear twice en route to finishing second.
