Kyle Bronson picked up a $10,000 paycheck at Southern Raceway.
What won the race: Leading all the way, polesitter Kyle Bronson of Brandon, Fla., picked up a popular home-state victory, winning his second NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series race of the season. Bronson pulled away from Travis Pennington of Stapleton, Ga., and Walker Arthur of Forest, Va., following a late restart and easily beat Arthur to the stripe. Pennington settled for third after surrendering the second spot to Arthur with five laps remaining. Bronson earned $10,000 for winning the 10th annual Southern 100.
Quotable: “We got a pretty good team and our car was really good when we unloaded,” winner Kyle Bronson said. “There on that last couple of restarts, I spun the tires a little bit on the start. I was trying to drive the car too easy and save the tires. The last two or three laps I said the heck with it. I was just going for the win.”
Key notes: Bronson pulled away over the final five laps and won by 3.371 seconds, his biggest advantage of the race. … Bronson started on the pole after winning the first heat in Friday's prelims. … Bronson previously won on May 27 at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss. … Both Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., and Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., gave up third place in the final 10 laps due to apparent tire trouble. Joiner brought out a caution and gave up third on lap 90, while Johnson, who inherited the spot from Joiner, did the same on lap 94. … Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., rallied from the tail of the field to finish fifth after he was charged with a caution following contact with Walker Arthur on lap 11. … The race, which took nearly 1 hour, 15 minutes to complete, was slowed by 16 cautions, including eight in the first 18 laps. … The longest green-flag run was 29 laps from lap 18 to lap 47. The longest run following that was nine laps.
On the move: Devin Dixon of Apollo Beach, Fla., finished fourth after starting 16th.
Winner's sponsors: Bronson’s Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Brandon Collision, All Florida Real Estate Group and Brandon Ford.
