G.R. Smith waves to the crowd at Southern Raceway.
What won the race: G.R. Smith of Cornelius, N.C., was able to carry over his momentum from Saturday's track record in qualifying by leading all 50 laps of the Southern All Star Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway. The race's outside front-row starter pocketed $5,000 after beating Spencer Hughes of Meridian, Miss., to the finish line.
Quotable: "Broke the track record by a half-second and led every lap (of the feature)," the 36-year-old Smith said. "After being out (nearly) nine months you couldn't have drawn it up any better. Just had a good night and a really good race car."
Key notes: G.R. Smith returned to the driver's seat for the first time since last July after mostly serving as car owner for Jonathan Davenport (in the second half of 2017) and Brian Shirley (during 2018's Georgia-Florida Speedweeks). ... Smith notched his second career Southern All Star victory and first since July 1, 2006, at I-20 Speedway in Batesville, S.C. ... Smith set the tone by lowering the track record at the 3/8-mile oval with a 14.095-second lap. ... The 17-year-old Hughes registered his runner-up finish in his debut with Henderson Motorsports. ... Brad Skinner retired with a broken header and an early crash eliminated Ryan Crane. ... Eight drivers made their SAS debut (Chris Smith in sixth the best of them). ... Friday's Bash at the Beach action was rained out.
On the move: Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., started 13th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Smith's Rocket Chassis has a Cornett Racing Engine and is sponsored by FK Rod Ends, Dirtwrap, Behrent's Performance Warehouse, Victory Circle Auto Sales and Victory Circle Auto Mall.
Points chase: After two series races, Tristan Sealy has 154 points followed by Jay Scott (148) and Ray McElhiney (136).

Time: 14.095 seconds

Next series race: April 21, Duck River Raceway Park (Wheel, TN) $4,000
