Ronnie Johnson picked up a Chevy Series victory at his home track.
What won the race: Leading all 40 laps, Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., continued his mastery at Boyd’s Speedway, picking up a popular win in Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series action at his home track. Johnson finished 1.881 seconds ahead of Riley Hickman.
Quotable: “This is a special win for me and the team to be able to come to my home track and run as well as we did tonight,” Johnson said. “I can’t thank Kathie Coulter and the folks here at Boyd’s Speedway enough for having this race. It’s a great way to start off the season.”
Key notes: The victory was Johnson's career-leading sixth victory with the Chevy Series. … Hickman caught Johnson in the waning stages, but couldn’t make a pass as they negotiated lapped traffic over the final 10 circuits. … The race was slowed by three cautions: debris from Joseph Brown’s broken rearend on lap 23; Chase King’s spin on a lap-23 restart; Landon Bagby’s stalled car on a second lap-23 restart attempt. … The purse was bumped to $2,500-to-win (from $2,000) following the cancellation of Saturday’s tour stop at nearby North Georgia Speedway due to the severe weather threat. … Ten of the 22 starters completed all 40 laps. … Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., won the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Chad Wallace of LaGrange, Ga., improved seven positions after starting 18th.
Winner's sponsors: Johnson's Capital Race Car is sponsored by Josh Roberts Trucking and Stacy Whitfield Tile Inc.
