Brandon Thirlby earned $4,000 for his Ethanol Tour victory at I-96.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead on lap 31 when race-long leader Rusty Schlenk's car rolled after a tangle with Rich Bell, sixth-starting Brandon Thirlby of Traverse City, Mich., raced to a $4,000 American Ethanol Late Model Tour victory in I-96 Speedway’s YellowHouse.com 40.
Quotable: "I feel bad for Rusty and Rich," Thirlby said immediately after climbing from his car. "They got into it; Rich went over his head. ... It's kind of hard when it's fast up there and you're trying to make something happen, but I think that's a little uncalled for."
Key notes: Thirlby scored his third career Ethanol victory and his fourth on the Sunoco American Late Model Series, which co-sanctioned the race. … Schlenk and Bell got together on a late-race restart, sending Schlenk's car upside down on the backstretch. He climbed from the car apparently uninjured and, according to series reports, "extracurricular activities ensued." .... …. The race was slowed by multiple early cautions, including a multi-car tangle on lap two. … Chad White drew a caution on lap 11. … Another yellow flag waved on lap 31 for Matt Shipley; third-running Steve Casebolt slowed under the caution. … Eight cars finished the 40-lapper. ... The tours are set to co-sanction two more events at I-96 on June 29 and July 27.
On the move: Travis Stemler of Ionia, Mich., advanced from the 13th starting spot to round out the podium in third.
Winner's sponsors: Thirlby's Rocket Chassis has a Ford Pro Power Racing Engine and sponsorship from Thirlby Automotive, Corrigan Race Fuels, FK Rod Ends and KBC Graphix.
Points chase: With his victory, Brandon Thirlby moved into the Ethanol Tour's points lead.
