Crew members welcome Benji Hicks to 311's victory lane.
What won the race: Winning a race in tribute to his grandfather, third-starting Benji Hicks of Mount Airy, N.C., overtook Joey Coulter with 13 laps remaining Friday at 311 Motor Speedway. Hicks earned $4,000 for both his first career Ultimate Southeast Series victor and first career Super Late Model victory in finishing 3.5 seconds ahead of Coulter, who led the first 27 laps.
Key notes: Hicks, who works as a fabricator at Longhorn Chassis, is the tour's third straight first-time winner. ... The race was in honor of Bill Hicks, the race winner's grandfather, who passed away after suffering a heart attack at 311 Speedway 27 years ago. Hicks's sons Tony, Billy and Mark raced at 311 as well. ... Twelve drivers completed 40 laps. ... The track hosted the Ultimate Southeast Series for the sixth time; another visit is scheduled for Oct. 5.
On the move: Justin Williams of Shipman, Va., started 14th and finished seventh.
