Dale McDowell celebrates his $5,000 Spring Nationals win at Dixie.
What won the race: Third-starting Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., made an outside pass of race-long leader Tyler Millwood with 15 laps remaining Saturday at Dixie Speedway and raced to his third Schaeffer's Spring Nationals victory of the season. McDowell earned $5,000 in the tour's first event of the weekend after Thursday and Friday rainouts.
Quotable: “We was a little free on the bottom. We thought with the racetrack being wet down there (in the bottom) we were gonna be a little tighter,” said McDowell. “We were just a little bit free down there. Once I moved to the outside I was able to keep it rolling. We put a different engine combination in for here … a smaller engine for these slicker racetracks, or normally slicker. Tonight (the track) was fast, so that hurt us a little bit early, but it was OK later.”
Key notes: McDowell leads the series with nine career victories. ... The winner has four victories in his last six starts, with five overall on the season. ... Runner-up Tyler Millwood started outside the front row and led 35 laps. ... Second-running Jason Croft had right-rear problems that forced him out on lap 15. ... Dixie was originally the third race of the Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals tour’s busy Memorial Day weekend, but events at Crossville (Tenn.) Raceway and Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Ga., were rained out. ... Mother Nature threatened Saturday's event but it was completed after the start was slightly delayed for more track prep. ... Jake Knowles of Tyrona, Ga., won the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Michael Page of Douglasville, Ga., started 17th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: McDowell’s Sweet-Bloomquist Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Textron Off Road, New Era Industrial, Boyd’s Speedway, Will Kinzer Foundation, Cometic Gasket and Klotz Lubricants.
Points chase: Heading to Dixie, Eric Wells (1,132) of Hazard, Ky., led Zach Leonhardi (1,078), Aaron Ridley (1,076), Casey Roberts (1,066) and Ryan King (1,008).
