Series rookie Ashton Winger won his first tour victory.
What won the race: Rebounding from a last-lap loss, series rookie Ashton Winger of Fayetteville, Ga., captured Saturday's Rumble on the Gumbo finale at Greenville Speedway. Winger, who finished second to Jake Knowles on Friday, earned $2,500 for his first series victory.
Quotable: “I’ve grown up coming to these Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model races always wanting one of those Gold Helmet Trophies ever since I can remember, and now I have one,” winner Ashton Winger said. “I can’t thank my crew and my family enough because I pretty much wrecked the car last night trying to win the race. They fixed it, put it back together, and gave me another shot to win tonight.”
Key notes: The third-starting Winger, who took the lead for good on lap 36 from runner-up Ashley Newman, lapped all but nine competitors. ... Newman led three times for 13 laps in a race with seven lead changes. ... Series points leader Cory Hedgecock led early. ... Jake Knowles won his first series event on Friday with a last-lap pass of Winger in his Greenville debut; the polesitting Knowles led five laps but retired early . ... The weekend was a makeup on a series plagued by weather with six of the first 10 races washed out.
On the move: Runner-up Ashley Newman of Ripley, Tenn., started ninth; Austin Burns of Georgetown, Ind., started 15th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Winger's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Johnny Doan Plumbing, Textron Off Road, Keyser Mfg., and J&C Properties.
