Jake Knowles heads to victory at Smoky Mountain Speedway.
What won the race: Fast qualifier and polesitter Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., led all 40 laps Saturday at Smoky Mountain Speedway for a $3,000 victory on the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series.
Quotable: “I chose a hard tire for the right front, and it wasn’t warm enough for the first turn, but we got a run off the second turn to take the lead after we drifted up high,” winner Jake Knowles said. “I like special occasions. I won on Mother’s Day, and he we are in victory lane on Father’s Day! This win is also special because my grandfather passed away 12 years ago tonight, and he must have been driving for me because this car seemed like it just drove itself.”
Key notes: Knowles, who got an additional $400 for fast time, nabbed his fourth victory in his last five starts overall. ... Knowles won his second career Chevy Series race; his first came April 12, 2014, at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City. ... A single caution slowed the 30-lap feature when Buster Goss stalled in turn four on the 14th lap. ... Ten drivers completed 40 laps. ... The Chevy Series ran on the undercard of the Southern All Star Series event won by hometown driver Tommy Kerr. ... Smoky Mountain held its lone series event.
On the move: Zach Pilcher of Rome, Ga., started seventh and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Jake Knowles drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Buster Goss Body Shop, Knowles Race Parts & Bodies, Josh Roberts Trucking, Curbow Logging, Shorty's Motorsports, Martins Wrecker Service, AG Calf Ranch and JW Motorsports.
