What won the race: Taking the lead on the opening lap when polesitter Dustin Nobbe bobbled slightly in turn one, second-starting Skylar Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., led all 50 laps for his second career Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Series win. Marlar turned back marginal pressure from Todd Coffman over the final five laps and avoided catastrophe when he made contact with Rod Carter’s lapped car as he headed to the checkered flag. Marlar earned $3,000 in winning the fourth annual Finn Watson Memorial.
Quotable: “First time we raced this year and I felt really rusty,” said Marlar. “I just didn’t feel comfortable all night, even all throughout that feature, but this (car) is good. I’ve gotta (thank) Jesse and all the guys.”
Key notes: The race was in honor of the former central Kentucky racer from Campbellsville, who passed away in 2013. Watson amassed more than 300 victories in a career spanning 38 years. He finished 12th in the 1976 World 100. Watson’s son Jeff finished sixth on Saturday. … Previous Watson Memorial winners include Jackie Boggs (’17), Greg Johnson (’16) and Victor Lee (’15). … There have been seven different winners in eight Iron-Man races this season. … The tour’s season actually began back on Dec. 30.
On the move: Tommy Bailey improved three positions after starting seventh.
Points chase: After Lake Cumberland, Joey Standridge (1,392) of Tellico Plains, Tenn., leads Todd Coffman (746), Jason Jameson (740), Connor Meade (716) and Ray Cook (712).
